A GUIDE TO GAS
Co2/Argon Mix
Used as a shield to exclude air from the welding arc and prevent oxidization of the steel in mig welding. 5% mix for steel up to 6mm thickness, 20% for steel over 6mm thickness.
Pure Argon
Used as a shield again when mig welding Aluminium or Tig welding.
Oxygen
Combined with Acetylene to produce a hot flame for oxyacetylene or “gas” welding. Can also be used with Propane to produce a flame hot enough to cut steel but probably not as fine a flame as in oxyacetylene welding.
Nitrogen
Used to pressure test automotive aircon system, (a legal requirement since July 2010) Also used by racing teams when building shock absorbers and even used in pneumatic gear change mechanisms in drag racing vehicles!!
Helium
“Balloon Gas” Adaptor available to connect balloons to bottle.
R134A
Tetrafluoroethane, used in automotive aircon systems, R134A is a liquefied gas rather than a compressed gas and should only be used by trained technicians.
